The Machinery Directive 98/37/EC, mandatory since 1 January 1995, covers machinery, subassemblies and safety components. In the interest of the safety of European Citizens and setting a standard of high quality for products entering the European Market, the European Commission requires that manufacturers selling machinery, subassemblies or safety components in the European Economic Area meet the Harmonized Standards for design and safety.
